Reason for absence

My original reason (study program) for being outside the U.S. just finished. I can document this reason. My reentry permit I-131 is still valid until the next year.

Do I need to return as soon as possible or just anytime before the permit expires?

You can stay abroad until the permit expires. You don't have to strictly adhere to the original reason.

Yes you can stay abroad until permit expires but stay out of US for more than a year could pose a problem when applying for US citizenship later.Keep in mind.
