real important question

hey guys
im about to file for my citizenship...greencard so to speak....since we had to save up for the processing fees my passport expired.
i have a couple questions about that.
first i was told that i absolutely need my passport for the fingerprinting interview/ appointment...can i just show up with my expired passport and birthcertificate and marriage license and what not?
if not i will have to pretty much apply for a new passport...my consulate wants a freedom of information/ privacy act from the ins stating that i am not a citizen nor applied for citizenship yet.
since i am right now not considered to be a legal resident i dont know how to go about that or what consequences it would have if i just send one out.
would ins just stand in front of my door and take me away?
does anyone have any experience with it or could help me out in this matter?
if i cant go to the fngerprinting without a valid passport i would have to wait so much longer to file for my greencard since i have been told that the foi/pa act is taking quite long and i would be getting my passport in MONTHS 9 god only knows how many)
please if anyone has any information about this let me know...i would greatly aprreciate it.
thanks

from the fingerprint notification:

WHEN YOU GO TO THE APPLICATION CENTER TO HAVE YOUR FINGERPRINTS TAKEN, YOU MUST BRING:
1. THIS APPOINTMENT NOTICE and
2. PHOTO IDENTIFICATION. Naturalization applicants must bring their Alien Registration Card. All other applicants must bring a passport, driver's license, national ID, military ID, or State-issued photo ID. If you appear without proper identification, you may not be fongerprinted.

All I had for identification was US driver's license.

You are not entirely clear with your questions.

1) Are you applying for citizenship or your green card?
2) For fingerprinting, you only need a Drivers License (that's what I used). You don't need to take everything listed on the form, just one thing.
3) Assuming you are not here illegally, and are in the process of applying for your green card, then your status is "AOS pending" which IS a legal status. So I wouldn't worry about being taken away.
4) If you are applying for permanent residency, and you are approved, then you will need a valid passport for the I-551 stamp (temporary evidence of permanent residency) assuming you want to travel overseas before your physical card arrives.
