Re-entry to US from Canada with expired H1 visa

Hi,

I need to go to Canada to complete my Canadian Permanent Residency formalities. The issue is that my H1 visa got expired in January '06. But my H1 petition got extended recently (valid till 2008) and I have got the approval documents. I would like to know if I can visit Canada for couple of days and come back to US with my expired H1 visa. I'm not planning to get my H1 visa stamped in Canada, so would like to know if I can come back to US with the H1 approval documents and valid I-94 (and with expired H1 visa). I would appreciate if you can provide any information regarding this query.
