Re entry permit

I have a green card since jan '03. I have been abroad from may '05 to april '07 visiting USA once in Nov '05. I have a valid re entry permit before leaving USA and it expires on Sept '07.
I want to apply for a new re entry permit. The govt website says that "u need to be in USA to apply for a new re entry permit and also send the old permit with the application for new one".
My question was, can I apply for a new re entry permit before the old one expires. Like mine expires on Sept '07. So can I apply in April 07 and send the still valid permit with the application for a new one. I have to apply now as I will be unable to travel/ come to USA after April '07 to April '08.

Pl advise.

My re-entry permit is expiring in June 2007. I will be going to US in mid-April for a business trip, and was planning to apply for a new re-entry permit (REP) at that time.

Problem is that if I send in my current REP with the new REP application, then can I travel again to US even if I have not received my new re-entry permit by then?....I may have to visit US again for business around July-August.

Obviously, you've been absent from US for a long time. You might get into a big trouble at the POE without the re-entry permit. The entry officer can mark it on their computer that you have abandoned the residence.
