Hi,
Our re-entry permit (first time) expires in October, and I am in a dilemma whether to renew it or not. My wife has almost made up her mind for staying in India, but I am still a bit doubtful. I sometimes get anxious on the thoughts of giving up GC. We returned to India with the idea of being close to family, but being not in the same city, it is not working out the way we thought it would. We still get to see them maximum twice a year (however there is comfort of them being a few hour away by flight). Career is ok, with its own flavor of Indian office politics, and day-to-day hassles are there, as we expected. It has been only a couple of months in job for me (did 1-yea MBA from ISB, which shielded us from the real "living in India" experience), so I think it is probably a bit early to give up GC. At the same time, it is true that right now, I cannot imagive myself living in US for the rest of my life. We have a son, who is USC by birth. No plans for second kid as yet, but if we decide to have our second child in India, then the thought of his/her citizensi different from our first kid does come into my mind (wife is ok with that).
Maybe I digressed a bit, but with this background, I sometimes think that its probably better to go back to US and get the "long term insurance" of USC. Requires sacrifice of 4.5 years, probably. Wife disagrees though, saying she does not want to make these big moves yet again, with the associated expenses, if we don't want to be in US long term. Whereas I think about some of the potential benefits of USC from financial/career perspective, even when we are in India, as highlighted in other R2I forums.
With this confusion, I thought I should use this forum as a sounding board for thoughts. Please help in clearing my thoughts!
P.S.: I have other questions regarding re-entry permit, which I will post as separate thread.
