In US-VISA travel guide for PR its written re-entry permit should be applied 30 days prior to intended departure date.

Is this mandatory? Has anyone applied < 30 days before deaprting usa and got their re-entry permits?

thx

No, it's not mandatory. It's advisable to apply early so that you get the application receipt before departure.

Can you apply for REP and leave US before REP is approved ? I have heard you can ask them to mail your REP to consulate in your home country or can you give frinds address where they can mail your REP ?

Yes, you can leave after applying, requesting USCIS to send the REP at nearest consulate (in application form). But just like many other govt offices, consulate is notorious for loosing things. That's why it's better to have receipt before leaving.

Guys How does Reentry Permit looks like ? Is it like a booklet or just a sheet of paper with a photo on it? can you travel with Reentry permit to other countries and do they accept it as Travel Document? Do you need a visas to enter certain countries?
Thanks for you replies

I have applied the Re-entry permit in July, 2005. The case has been approved on Oct 4th, 2005 based on online information. But so far I didn't get it in mail. In the application, I chose the document to be sent to American consulate at Toronto (5b in I-131 application form). I also gave my current address in toronto for the notice to pick up the document be sent (5d in I-131 application form).

How should I do now? I tried to call US consulate at Toronto with the number 416-595-1700. But it is all automatic answering. I didn't get the useful information. Normally how long will it take to get the notice to pick up the travel document after it is approved?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks, JoeF. I guess I have to wait.
The Enquirer,
I simply used "visiting" as the reason for applying Re-entry permit. I heard that it is easy to get it at first time. My fiance lives in Canada. That is why I have to move here. Sometimes you have to balance the situations. It is hard to say if it is safe or not. Just give a try if your job in Canada is very important for you. Otherwise stay where you are now. I am sure there are risky factors for applying for Re-entry permit. But......

In oder to get the information for my appoved Re-entry permit (approved on Oct 4, 2005), I sent a request to www.amcits.com. The followings are the questions and the answers from the consul. I am confused. Is this strange? I thought I should wait for the pick up notice sent by US consulate at Toronto.

Q: I am a US permanent resident and currently traveling in Canada. I have
applied for I-131 travel document (Reentry permit) before I left for the
trip. Based on the online information, the case has been approved in the
early of October. I requested the approval notice being sent to US
consulate at Toronto, Canada. So far ! I still didn't receive the notice
from the US consulate at Toronto for picking up the approved travel
document.I like to know that if the document has been sent to the consulate or not and how I can arrange a time for picking it up.

A: With some difficulty, I have located your re-entry permit. It is being held for you by U.S. Pre-flight Clearance at Pearson Airport in Toronto. You may pick it up by going to Terminal 3 at Pearson Airport to the departure level. You should turn right and proceed towards the American Airlines counter. The entry to the U.S. pre-flight inspection area is behind the counter. You will need to tell the security guard that you need to see an officer or a supervisor and that you are there to pick up your re-entry permit. DO NOT TRY TO PICK UP YOUR RE-ENTRY PERMIT TOMORROW, Wednesday, October 26. It will only be available from Thursday, October 27.

I hope that this information is helpful to you.

Sheila Berry
Consul
American Embassy, Ottawa

Q: Consul Berry,
Thanks for the information. If I understand correctly, what you said is that my re-entry permit just arrived in Toronto airport from US. I like to know when the Re-entry permit will go to Toronto consulate. Will I get the notice from the Toronto consulate to pick up the document? What is the Pre-flight Clearance about?

A: IT WILL NEVER GO TO THE CONSULATE. YOU MUST PICK IT UP AT THE AIRPORT.

hey luk

i think i heard of a case like this too. but not sure about the details. i thought the guy did not wan tot wait untill it came to the consulate.
anyways good luck in collecting it - and post ur experience.

Enquirer,
You mean I should trust what the consul said and go to the airport to pick up the Re-entry permit? Can you briefly tell me what the case you heard about?

I am still not sure how the consul has located my document. I only gave him my full name, no case number.

hi the case i heard ( i again say i dont have all the details) was - this guy wanted to go back to US from canada for a short visit during his extended stay in canada - i think he tried getting it - but was finally told to just get it in the airport and i think he just got it and immediately flew to US.
i dont think i can suggest you anything at this point- since iam not an expert.

but untill i saw ur thread i simply thought its just a different venue to collect.

Now the online message changes to "on Oct 27, the notice was returned by post office due to undelivery."
I guess they sent the notice to my previous address in US instead of US consulate in Canada. I have tried to call it with 1800 number. But it didn't work. I wrote a letter to INS requesting resend the notice to my home address in Toronto, Canada.

Doeas it mean that you work in Canada?
I recently moved to Canada after hurricanes. It happened to be that we have Canadian PR that just thought to abandon since we recently got USA PR. Now it seems better for us to be overthere for some time. I would like to know whether I should apply for reentry if we stay overthere for less than a year. My spouse got a job there but I was the applicant for the green card and plan not to work. I will try to freeze my emplyment in LA, USA for the period of one year. Also, since we do not have our appartment anymore we have to move our staff in Canada. Will we have a problem when we are coming back to USA? Thanks.

I got a job offer before I left US. The job contract is for 2 years. I currently work in Canada.
If you only stay out of the coutry for less than one year, it is not necessary for applying for Re-entry permit.

Luk 12:
So, you have a temporary work permit in Canada?
My question is: if we use our Canada PR to work overthere whether it will be dificult for us to get back into the USA even if we stay for less than a year.
By the way, do you like Canada? Is it much differenet from the USA?

In my opinion, using Canadian PR to work in Canada can give impression to a US POE officer that you have abandoned your US LPR status and accepted Canadian PR status.

Even though there is nothing wrong to keep PR status in multiple countries, but your action should not give impression that you have abandoned US LPR status. If you go to Canada and start working as Canadian PR, that can happen.

I think regarless of whether u use ur canadian PR or NOT - if an USCIS official sees that u have both Canadian PR and GC- u r in trouble. so its immaterial whether u work with ur canadian Pr or not.

didnt mean to scare you- but u should know the truth. ur best bet is to drive to Us (airports scrutinize more)- and tell POE that u went for a visit. dotn talk about working. thats ur best bet.

by the way if u decide to work in canada - and u ahve a PR- u cant really work with any other visa other than ur PR.

It is wrong to have PR status in multiple countries. its ok to have mutiple citizenship or multiple citizenships and one PR. ( neve more than one PR)
