Re-entry Permit Processing Time

I plan to apply for a Re-entry Permit to travel india for 1.5 years
. Just wondering what the current processing times are at the Nebraska Processing center.

Is it better to give US home address or US Consulate (Chennai) to pick up the permit.

Is it safe to leave US without the permit in hand. If the permit is not approved in 6 months is it better to visit US again within 6 months to avoid the risk of loosing the GC incase the re-entry gets denied or gets very delayed.

Thank you very much for your detailed answer. Your answer is much better than given by my lawyer. You are awesome.

In the naturalization document it is written that with a re-enty permit one losses continuous residence, however 1year minus 1 day is given towards naturalization. This means that after re-entry permit one has to be 4years and 1 day in US to apply for citizenship.

Any specific advice you like to give me.
