Re-entry permit for son starting studies abroad

Hello; we are LPR here, my son will start med school in Europe - long studies; at first he will come back from time to time to the family home in the US. So say his first stint abroad will be less than a year. SHould I get him a re-entry permit because he is starting long studies or should I consider that as long as he comes back from time to time intra-year to see the family, his stay abroad is less than one year ? The FAQ on ins.gov (the link works again btw ;) ) says

Re-Entry Permit
Lawful Permanent Residents (green card holders) use re-entry permits to re-enter the U.S. after travel of one year or more.

re-entry permit

One can apply for a re-entry permit and can request it to be handed at the US consulate where the person is temporarily living. The application is very simple with little to no documentation required. My son, an LPR is studying in Australia. Even though he comes over to the US for a couple of months during the X'mas break he makes sure that he enters in less than 12 months to avoid reseting the US citizenship clock. Incidentally it is 18 months since he applied and he has not yet received his re-entry permit. I think maximum permitted stay overseas is 4 years in blocks of 2 at a time. During his last visit he was asked how long he was out of the country and if he had a re-entry permit. At that time he was coming back after a 11 month period.

Re-entry and Citizenship clock

Hi brb2,

My daughter is also going to study abroad. She has her GC for the last 2-1/2 years. Can she apply for Citizenship once 5 yrs of GC is complete eventhough she is studying abroad? Please share if you have any info. Thx.

We are all in same boat. My 10 year old will be studying abroad and will visit me once a year. His stay abroad will be 10 months in a row and 2 months in US. For being on safer side, if I apply for REP, will that affect his clock on Citizenship? In other words, what role REP plays in criteria for eligibility on Citizenship?
