Hello; we are LPR here, my son will start med school in Europe - long studies; at first he will come back from time to time to the family home in the US. So say his first stint abroad will be less than a year. SHould I get him a re-entry permit because he is starting long studies or should I consider that as long as he comes back from time to time intra-year to see the family, his stay abroad is less than one year ? The FAQ on ins.gov (the link works again btw ) says

Re-Entry Permit
Lawful Permanent Residents (green card holders) use re-entry permits to re-enter the U.S. after travel of one year or more.
