My parents got their green card this Jan 2012. They are currently in India and their 6 months stay outside will expire in Jan 2013. They are unable to come back in time due to health reasons. My question :

1) Can I apply for their Reentry permit in order to keep the green card valid?
2) How often can we apply for the rentry permit and how long is it valid for?

Thank You

See answers below. One thing that confounds me is how many immigrants rush, even sometimes coerce their parents to move to the United States only to realize that older people typically have health issues and healthcare cost is EXPENSIVE in USA. Additionally the culture is alien to them and at their old age many truly do not want the change.

Most of these parents end up cooped indoors providing child care to the grand kids with little mobility and social life outside their children's lives. Being an immigrant myself and involved in a community organization, I see this too many times.

For those who can get them, a non-immigrant visitors visa is more than enough 75% of the time!

2) How often can we apply for the rentry permit and how long is it valid for? As many times as you want. The question is how many times you will be approved. It depends.

You should not judge anyone without knowing their situation, Everyone's family situation is different, What is the max time they can be outside of US on green card which may allow them to reenter without any issues.

I will be in the same situation after few months...but we are helpless, I tried visitor visa which got denied because my parents have US citizen son....now I applied for Immigrant visa & I will be in need of re-entry permits soon :)...
I think we can apply as many times we want to pay the fees but its up to authorities how many times it gets approved...
