Re-entry permit--can I keep a valid RP while applying for a new one

Hi, All,

I am planning to apply for a re-entry permit. My current RP is expiring within a month. I want to keep my current RP, as it has my travel records, which I would need for my naturalization. I red in many places that one cannot keep a valid RP with him/her while applying for a new one. If include a letter with my I-131 application and explain the situation, would USCIS make an exception in this case?

Would appreciate if you could share your experience.

If you apply while your current RP is valid, then you have to surrender your RP with your application. However if you apply after the current RP expires, then you may be able to keep it
