re-entering the USA

I have a five year visa & have to depart after a 6 month stay. Once I return to Aus how long is it before I can re-enter the states?

Usually 6 months away is a good idea. If you are in the USA for more than 6 months per year you are not considered a tourist anymore, now you are resident.

Can you justify long absences from your country without working for a living? Can you show proof of economic solvency? How do you support yourself? Can you demonstate with proof to the inspector that you have a strong incentive to return to your country and there's little risk that you will overstay when admitted?
The burden of proof is on you. If you show the inspector impression or reasons to believe your purpose in coming to the US is doubtful, and you are short in providing solid evidence of anything he may want you to show material to your status, then he can cancel your visa right there and then! He can order you to take the next flight home!
