If your H1 status expired and using EAD for work, and applying AP for travel, if you have emergency and can show written evidence then the local office may approve, otherwise normal process. But, here are my 2 cents.. If you are paper filing, then try to put an early date as intended date of travel. Somebody told me they will check and may approve based on that also. We applied in Feb 1st week and my h1 expired in April 15, so we put April 2nd week as intended date of travel. We got AP approval on April 12. Their processing dates at that time were also close.

Is paper filing faster than e-filing? Do you need to have a pending AP application in order to request an emergency AP? what are emergencies they may consider? In my case, my wife needs to visit her mother who has late statge cancer and she hasn't filed for an AP. Can she go directly for an emergency AP? What kind of evidence is required b/c we learnt of the news by telephone. Many thanks for any reponse.

I think probably your wife may be able to go for an emergency AP. I dont know exactly what they mean by evidence , please consult your attorney. I would guess a telegram or something of serious illness, or doctor's report, etc. I dont know if the regular AP have to be filed before going for an emergency. This is just a guess, please act according to what your attorney says.
Someone said paper filing is faster than e-filing if not emergency. But it will still take the normal process time. So, try to get an emergency AP for her.

I believe they used to process only 30 AP a Day – in Feb of 2004 we went to Newark, NJ office - & we’re turned down by referring the quota of 30 a day – they gave us a letter to come back next day & with some instructions – ‘DO not stay in outside line’ – ‘come directly upstairs…..took more then 5 hrs on the following day – even without the line…..
Ya…we had to show them the tickets about Emergency our travel…..
Does anyone know about DAILY limitations for AP….?

Can U pls give details like which service center you went to and how long it took to get it. What all documents you had to show, etc

I went to the Newark district office. No need for an appt. The immigration officer asked for doctors note. Then she grilled me with questions for about 20 mins. She also asked to see if I had filed my AP with vermont(which i had done). Also asked for date of departure. Can't remember if she asked to see flight reservation....I did take it with me anyway. Hope this helps.

What was total time taken during this process meaning were you asked to wait for long time.
Did you get it the same day?
Did you had your AP receipt copy or AP receipt number with you?
Did you had the doctors note with you the same day?

What exactly is doctor note? Is email from your relatives enough? Or should it be a fax from that doctor in your country? Do you need to translate it and notarize it? Do you have an example of such a note?
