Quick question

This question sounds pretty stupid but is very important. It is required that one should send 2 photos with N-400 application but at the same time it is reqd that one should mention the name and A# on the backside of the photo with the pencil. I have tried with all types of pencils available in the market but it is really really very difficult to write on a photo paper with pencil. Those who have already done this can you please advise as to what type of pencil you used to write on the back of the photos.

Thanks,

I had the exact same dilemma as you as the photo studio that I got my photos from, used really slippery paper and hence I could not get any pencil to write on it. But, my husband could write on his photo (from a different place) because they used a different kind of paper.
Finally, I took the risk and wrote lightly with a black ball point pen (to me it looks like a pencil mark). I don't want them to delay the processing because of the absence of the writing at the back of the photos. When I go for the actual interview, I will carry 2 more photos (making sure that it is possible to write on the photo paper) as backup and submit them if the Interviewing officer had any issues. But, I don't think that it will come to that.

I took my photos at Sears and could write with a pencil easily...

I think the enitre point of that is just to frustrate you and yet another little trick to make it frustrating to file. I tried the same, and finally used one of those mechanical pencils that you push the top and the lead comes out (rather then shaprening). That was the best way to get it to work, still was barely noticible, but they never said anything about it and I passed the interview...

I wrote on the back of mine with a 2B pencil but it was soooo faint, you can't really see it at all.

I sent it in with the N400 anyway and figured I'd bring extra photos just in case.

Just had my interview and the IO used the photos I sent in originally. He didn't ask me for new photos at all. All he had me do was sign my full name in cursive on the front side of the pictures.

Don't worry too much about it..do the best you can and send in your N400 with those pics. :D

Maybe you'll be interested to hear the way USCIS solved this problem at my inteview... the IO lightly abraded an area of the photo with 400 grit sandpaper!

You could probably use a dull emery board too.
