Hello.

We (husband-principal applicant, myself and 10 month old baby) have been recently (August'02)granted Candian PR. Would really appreciate if someone could please help us with the following questions:

1. Is it better to land by air or land route? If land route, then is it better to take personal car or rent a car? what paperwork would need to be cleared?

2. We are in Iowa so would Toronto (by air) / Detroit-Windsor or Port Huron borders (by land) would be the best places to land? Anyone have experiences with these land routes?

3. My husband is on EAD/OPT and I am on F-1 (graduating Dec.02); can he land first and settle down and then come get his family? Would he have problems at either US or Canada border?

4. Any suggestion for accomodation/job-hunt?

Application transferred from India/re-application February 2001

File transferred to Detroit office March 2001

Interview call February, 2002

Medical Exam April 2002

Additional Medical Exam June 2002

Passports asked for visa stamp August 2002

PS: We started the process in India in November 1997!! So hang in there; it will eventually happen. In fact if you don't get called for an interview it should happen in about a year's time.

landing through Windsor

Rashmi Gupta,

I used Windsor border for landing last year. I rented a car and showed them rental paper. If you take your car then you have to pay tax. You can do the following for landing:

1. Make a list of all of your items that you want take in Canada in future (car, electronics, household items, etc). Immigration officer will approve this list and you don't need to pay any taxes.
2. You have to show them how much money you are taking with you. I took US$6000.
3. Apply for SIN # and permanent resident card
