questions about reference letters for NIW (or EB1A)

How long do they have to be (in terms of words)? Do they have to be mailed or is fax okay? I'm getting references from people in different countries, and fax is much faster. These letters do not have to be sealed, do they?
Thanks

Your lawyer is the best person to answer all your questions related to your NIW petition.

my lawyer told me...

to first contact people to see if I can get good references. Then he'll decide whether to take my case. So I'd like to know what I need to expect from the people providing the references (what constitute a good reference).
Anyway, if you care to share your experience, I'd appreciate it.

My personal opinion:

You are going the wrong way.If this is what he says, then either he is not good or he has serious doubts on your chances for NIW.Your lawyer wants to play it safe depending on the strength of the letters.

A capable lawyer who understands very well the process and nuances of NIW, will not ask you to furnish the letters first and THEN decide whether he/she would take up the case or not.He/she should assess your chances on the basis of your CV,publications, awards, etc and if good enough for a successful NIW, he/she would take up the case (and ofcourse fee),give you sample reco letters and thereafter, you need to contact the writers and get those letters.

May be it is time for you to contact other good attorneys to get their honest opinion on your chances first and then proceed further.

I just happened to read your earlier post "if a masters degree is required for NIW."

If I understand correctly, you have not yet obtained your PhD degree and so,your laywer may have his own reasons about asking for letters first.

You should definitely contact other excellent lawyers like Rajiv Khanna and seek their opinion on your chances of NIW at this stage of your career.
