Hello,
I have submitted I-485, and am waiting for a return receipt.
My petition is an employment sponsored one.
When I receive the return receipt, I\'m going to apply for a work permit.
I guess this will invalidate my H-1B visa, right?
Anyways, can I work part-time at a different company without any other procedure/approval?
Can my wife, who applied the I-485 together, work, too with the work permit?

Thank you for your answer.

You could have applied for the work permit (EAD) along with I-485.
You can simultaneously hold a H1 & Work Permit. (Check murthy.com).
Once you get EAD you can work anywhere and any number of jobs. Also your wife can work once she gets her EAD card.
It is always advantageous to hold H1 along with EAD. If for some reason (God forbid that), the I-485 is denied, your EAD will become invalid immediately. But if you have H1, you will be in valid status.

Thank you for your answer.
My lawyer told me I can apply for the EAD once I received a return receipt of I-485 from INS.
Do you think I can still apply for it without the return receipt?
Thank you again.

Nope - you need the 485 receipt to apply for EAD or for the travel document - Advance Parole.

That\'s true. If you are applying for EAD after applying for 485 then you will need the 485 receipt.

I have applied for my EAD and AP along with I-485 application. My wife\'s applications also followed the same route. Lot of people I know filed all these together. So I can positively say that it is possible to file all 3 at the same time.
