After I-485 approval, what is a persons status? Is it permanent resident? Does one become a permanent resident only after the plastic card is obtained?

u r an "official" permanant residense as soon as u get the approval notice from the mail.

I think the approval letter clearly states that it's not permit for working for working or travelling.
