Question wrt. landing / moving...

Hi Folks,

I have completed passport stamping and plan to make a 3-4 days trip to Canada to complete landing process, come back to US and the go back to Canada @ Aug-Sep time frame. Had a couple of quick questions...

1) Wife's passport expiry date is @ Oct 2005. Is there some restriction like "your passport must be valid atleast 6 months when you go for landing formalities"?

I do not think so (I think I remember this from the US H1B visa information somewhere, not canada). I just want to make sure, in case I missed this somehow...

2) This is regarding the "goods to follow" list. When we move, we will probably be shipping/UHauling by land most of the items that we have here, so the load should be maybe one of the small/medium size UHaul. So how particular are the customs wrt. the goods to follow list? Say I miss something / add a couple of new items / sell of stuff that is on the list, does it matter a lot? Will they physically verify what is in the truck? Guess not.

The second question is just off the top of my head, pls bear with me in case there is an obvious/easy-to-find answer that I have not looked at :)

Thx
Sal

IMO

Since your wife already has a canadian landing visa stamped, you are good to go. If there is a possibility of an issue, CIC would have issued instructions to you. But I think it shud be fine.

In general people advise to list all items you own of value to be listed as if you list it and dont take it its fine. But if you dont list an item and take it you might have to pay duties on that item. When I landed, the officer was mentioning that car is what they are concerned about mainly. In general if you have an idea of what you might buy between the time you land and actually move, it might be better to list that item in the goods to follow list anyway. for eg. large screen tv :) or something like that.

Thanks sapota1, for ur reply.

Big screen tv, nice idea! Now need to convince wife, how badly I "need" the BS (no pun intended :) ) TV!

Is it really a lot cheaper to buy stuff (say laptops, LCDs, etc) in the US rather than Canada? From what I gather, 1) the Canadian taxes etc are higher 2) there are not as many "deals" (rebates, etc) to be had in Canada, making it costlier. Any inputs on this, anyone?

Any goods that are purchased after "landing" are subject to duties and taxes.
when they are imported.
