hi:
I wanted to ask for some help, as I am not in the Medical field. A friend of mine wanted to find out what is needed to come to the US to teach. She did her MBBS/MD/MS from Delhi, and is teaching there now?

Does she need to do any residency or just take some exams? Does anyone know how long this process would take? I have asked her to inquire also on her end, but if anyone over here knows, it would be great.

thanks

Long way:

- she has to take and pass USMLE step 1 and step 2CS exams
- she has to find a residency position in pathology in the US
- she has to do a 3 year residency in pathology
- she has to pass USMLE step 3
- she has to pass the 'board exam' for pathology

A-Z this would probably take 4-5 years.

Unless she came and worked in a pure research capacity. If she did that, she wouldn't need to pass any of the exams, but she would be subjected to the usual uncertainties of bench-research academic life.

teaching

She will have to do several years of Pathology fellowship (2-3 years) publish extensively before she can get a teaching job in a Pathology department. If she wants to take the Basic Science route to teach pathology, she has to do Ph D, then several years of post-doc fellowship at very low salary and then get grants to justify a teaching position. Getting grants is very, very difficult, especially for non-citizens/non-permanent residents. The residency route is easier.
