Question Regarding entering US on AP

My wife went to india on a round trip ticket to India.
While coming back she wants bring her mother with her.
But they are not getting the tickets on the same flight.
That's why she wants to buy new one way tickets from different Air lines(for her and her mother).
So that both can travel together.
My Question is it a problem to travel to INDIA on one air line round trip ticket, But returned with other air line ticket ??

Will this create any confusions while entering US on AP ?

Shouldn't be a problem, AP doesn't work on the basis of which airline you fly on.

Just a word of caution though, a friend of mine was leaving the US on a one way ticket and had to go through an intensive security check, while other people in the party were let of very lightly, when asked the security officer mentioned that since my friend was on a one way ticket they were making sure nothing was amiss. So you should ask your wife to be prepared for additional scrutiny. But that has nothing to do with the legality of entering the country, it is just the standard security check.
