Question regarding Citizenship

Hello Friends,

I have two questions,

1) What is the use of the section "Part 7. Time Outside the United States" in form N-400? Does the total days outside of US in last 5 years get subctracted to arrive at 5 years completion? In other words, if I was away for 4 months (in separate visists) from US in last 5 years, does that mean that it will be considered as if I completed 4 years 8 months and not 5 years?

2) Is it advisable to apply for citizenship for my wife while she is going on a vacation for two months?

No you have to be in US for at least 30 months in 5 year period and no trips longer than 6 month, if your trip was more than 6 months straight you have to start over again

1) No the days need not be subtracted. So hypothetically if there are 2 persons; first has a total of 4 months outside the US and the second has no time outside the US, both can apply at the same time. Also, note that you can actually send in the application 90 days before the 5 year period (preferably 85 days to be on the safe side) .

2) It is better that you apply after she comes back because she will need to go for fingerprinting and interview etc. The speed at which citizenship applications are currently being processed at most DO's, 2 months will be a very long time. Missing an appointment means effectively delaying the process by many months since the file goes out of the routine processing.
