question regarding changing spouse last name on indian passport

Hi

If we send the spouse passport for the last name change request to indian consulate office, do they issue new passport with the new name OR just keep a note/document on the existing passport about the last name change?

If they issue new one, do they keep the old passport with them ? if so how about the existing VISA stamping and other related issues?

please advise soon

The Indian consulate issues a new passport for the spouse and they attach (staple) the back page of the new one with the front page of the old one. Your spouse has to travel with both passports stapled together until she/he gets the visa and I-94 in the new one. My wife still has the two passports stapled together even after getting visa and I-94 in the new one, just in case.
If you are going to NY consulate, make sure you have extra copies of all documents and extra photographs too. Reach 30 min. early and be mentally prepared for the lousy customer service, just so you dont get frustated.

I was worried that they keep the old one, if they give out the old one along with the new passport , thats good enough
 
In this weather, its easier to mail it to NYC consulate. I got my wife's new passport with old stapled in a week.
