Question re obtaining a GC using my mother who is American but I am not

I am Australian and have been working in the US since the Jan of 2011 on a L visa which expires at the end of 2013. My mother is American and was born here but moved to Australia when she was 16. Rather than applying for a renewal to my visa I would like to try and apply for a GC. I am wondering if apply using my mother as the sponsor would be the best/easiest way to go about this?

You might already be a US citizen, depending on when you were born and your mother's marital status at the time of your birth.
