question on self-filing I-485 after I-140 filed by lawyer

I hired a lawyer to file I-140 at VSC in April 2004. Not until I checked my application status yesterday I didn't even know my I-140 was approved in Nov, 2004. Two months has passed since my I-140 was approved! I am very disappointed at my lawyer since I suppose it should be his job to find out my application status. Am I right? The only thing my lawyer cares is the money!

Now, my question is "can i file I-485 myself directly without going through my lawyer" (i.e., I want to fire him.) This is not just an issue of money, I can no longer trust his capability. Will I have any problem by doing this? If I can file I485 myself, can someone tell me how to do that? Is there a checklist and procedure guideline?

Thank you so much

thanks for your advice.

Can you tell me how to fire the lawyer? Should I prepare any written notice to him? Can he give me trouble?

My I140 was not employment-based, do I need letter of employment for I485 filing? Do I have to have birth certificate? I don't have one.

Thanks again
