Question on selective service registration

Just wish to confirm that selective service registration applies ONLY if one became a permanent resident between 18 and 26 years of age.

I obtained my green card when I was 31. Prior to that I was a student (F-1 visa) and briefly was working on a H-1 visa. From what I read, it appears that selective service registration does not apply to my case. Correct?

During INS citizenship interview, will my green-card along with passport suffice to prove the situation described above. Is anything else required?

Thanks.

I was always under the impression that we didn't need to register for SS until we became permanent residents, and didn't know about that caveat. I didn't get my permanent residency till I turned 27, and as such did not register. However, I was out of status for about 3-4 months while waiting for my H-1B approval. Will that cause a problem with my naturalization application?

How can I go about proving that I honestly didn't know about the need to register if one becomes out of status? Thanks!

JoeF,

Thanks so much for your help. I feel a lot now. :) However, how exactly does one go about proving that he didn't know about it? In any case, I will definitely hire an attorney to handle the naturalization application for me.

Nowadays, that should be all. For your peace of mind, you actually can send a form letter to Selective Services, and they will send you a letter back that you weren't required to register. The form letter is somewhere on their site (www.sss.gov/)

JoeF, Thanks for your reply.

I was on a valid non-immigrant visa until I was 31, which is when I obtained my green-card.

As for sending a form letter to selective service system and getting their response just to backup - I am not sure if I have the time for that. My interview is on February 6th. One approach may be to send the form letter to SSS and see if they respond before my interview. How important is the letter from SSS saying that I am OK as a backup? If I don't get a response in time will that affect my interview ? (that is, will that be taken as a "pending matter"?)

In recent interview experiences, was a letter expected for anybody in a situation similar to mine (that is, those with no need to register with SSS)?
(Desikuda - did you have to obtain the letter from SSS?)

Thanks, JoeF.

I will send my request to SSS and see what happens. I guess there is no harm in seeking backup. Except that a request to SSS should not be taken as a "pending" matter at the time of the interview with the INS.

Desikuda or some one else who recently went through the interview - any comments on the subject?

Thanks again.

SSS for GC before 26 yrs

If you were over 26 yrs of age when you attained PR status then there is no need to worry about SSS registration.
