Question on N-400 Photos

Well, I got my photos done today and they look like typical passport photos. The problem that I see with them is that there is no "white space in the margin" of the photograph that I can see. There is just a picture of my head and then white space all around me - there really is no margin.

The M-476 guide specifically asks applicants to ensure that there is enough white space in the margin when sending the application so that applicants can sign their names on the photos at the interview. The only way I can sign the photo is if I were to turn it 90 degrees right and then sign the side of my picture starting just above my right shoulder, or turn it 90 degrees left and again sign the side of the photo, ending above my left shoulder.

Is this normal or should I get the photos re-taken? All you have applied and been interviewed, please respond with your experiences.

No need for whitespace on the margin. Regular passport photo is fine. You sign your name on the whitespace above your shoulders. Please don't get your photos retaken ;) Yes, the typical thing is to sign over your right shoulder, along the vertical edge. In my case I signed name over right shoulder and last name over left shoulder. Anyway, regular passport pictures are fine and the interviewer will give you instructions on how to sign, don't sweat this. I believe the guide is a bit misleading (not wrong) on how the photos should be. I believe their intention was to say enough white space around the head and over shoulders.

Huracan & Desihai: thank you both so much for your prompt replies. That makes me feel so much better to know that my photos are fine. I will get another set of spare photos taken and take them with me to the interview, just as a precaution. If I don't need them, I will use them for my passport.

I actually did not file to beat the fee increase deadline, but only because my 5 yr minus 90 days is up on August 15th. If I could have beat the fee increase deadline, I certainly would have. However, it's no big deal and I am just happy that in a few short days I will be ready to apply!

Yes, you have to send two passport pictures with your application, plus photocopy of both sides of your green card. Please read the guide to naturalization and instructions in case your particular case requires extra documents.
