Question on Biometrics

Hi all,
I see people here talk about biometrics all the time but to tell you the truth I have no idea what they are.

Are they like a new part of the adjusting process. I've been fingerprinted twice already but never heard about biometrics.

Will someone be nice and explain briefly what those biometrics are ?

an index finger print
digital picture
and digital signature
just like they do in dmv for licence
so cis can use these on your upcoming green card.

Also, can some body explain please how INS notifying someone about biometrics, by mail or on-line by updating status of a case. I received RFE but nothing about biometrics. My dates are 05/08/2000, FP 04/01/2004, RFE April 25, 2005.
