Question on AP

I used to be H1B and now I am using EAD for my current job. Is it true that I do not need AP to go to Canada for a weekend and come back to USA. I was told that we only need AP when we go out of USA for more than a year and re-enter to USA.

You need a VALID AP if travel outside US no matter what duration you travel.
