Question for the Immigration Gurus - DUAL CITIZENSHIP with India

Do you know if this is true, one my friends mentioned this to me last night when we were chatting.

The US citizenship which will typically happen 5 years after GC is approved provided we apply for it will not make us eligible for the DUAL CITIZENSHIP that Indian Govt. is proposing. According to him it is only valid for people like kids who are born in USA and automatically hold a US citizenship by birth until they decide on which way to go when they turn 18 or 21.

I have asked him to send me the link where he read this article.

I would appreciate if you can enlighten me on this. I am also searching Google for the same and if I find something will definitely share with you all.

I think it depends on the country that you are considering DUAL CITIZENSHIP with.
I am not familier with nor interested in what Indian Govt. is proposing.
I am not a right person to answer your question, so you may want to change the title of this thread.

As far as dual immigration WRT govt. of India is concerned. Your friend is wrongly informed. The dual citizenship applies to the following people:
1. All people who were originally citizens of India before giving up their citizenships to take the citizenship of a select few countries. (This imples that if you gave up your Indian citizenship for the citizenship of Ghana, hard luck).
2. The spouses of the above.
3. Children of people who were originally of Indian Origin, inspite of the fact that they were born in a different country.

Thanks for your information on Citizenship, That exactly what I thought since it did not make sense what my friend told about dual citizenship which obviously is still in a state of limbo with the Indian Govt. not sure how long it will survive.

No one is destroying anything here and prying to anyone'e lives.

It was just a simple innocent curious question. Apparently Mr Kashmir is not interested in answering, which I have understood and hence won't be repeated.

More so when your name comes from a Indian state. If I have my nicname
as "Maharashtra" obviously lots of people could assume I come from Maharashtra state of India. For record if anyone is interested I come from Uttar Pradesh in India. If anyone is interested in any other personal details,
please let me know I will be glad to answer.
 
Okay everyone, calm down now :p

I think your friend was definitely wrongly informed. If you are currently a citizen of India and end up getting US Citizenship down the road - you will absolutely be able to retain DUAL citizenship - assuming the Bill passed in India becomes a law by the time you attain your US Citizenship.

I have never been to India but I love to visit.

There are some caveats to free speech - you know :)
Lets say you go to a private building and express your opinion - the owner is well within his rights to ask you to stop talking or leave - free speech doesn't apply in that case.
Its only when you are in a place that's "public" - as in funded with public moolah ... which I doubt this forum is :)

Anyways, just wanted to clarify that your speech can indeed be censored here. It has nothing to do with whether this country is free or not.

You are right this is a free country, and ruxrux is just excercising his right to free speach. Or are your rights different from his? :)
