I don't mean to pry and am just curious about something. I know that sweden is an advanced country and it even exceeds the USA in some quality of life parameters like pension and full government health care etc.

I am therefore curious why anybody would want to leave Swden and be so eager and happy ( as I read in one of your previous posts ) to get US citizienship.

Thanks

Hi Blister,

Please allow me to chip in ;-). I am German, VERY eager to get U.S. citizenship. I abhore many of the European things so many 'progressives' in this country would love to copy: 'free' health care, 'free' higher education, exorbitant tax rates etc. etc.

From personal experience, having lived in Germany for 24 years, none of those 'welfare' programs are working, let us not even mention the unintended consequences of the European nanny state. Additionally, how 'free' health care and gov't run pension schemes screw people. My parents (who still live in Germany and won't move to the U.S.) are a case in point... .

Additionally, unemployment in the EU having been in the double digits for more than a decade...stagnant economic growth etc. etc. all adds to the mix.

Since this is not a political forum, I will refrain from elaborating further, but I can absolutely understand why Europeans are eager to relocate to the United States.

Cheers!

I am from Europe too...
I came here 14 years ago with NO intention of staying. I DO LOVE my country, and I am proud of where I coming from. I came here for Grad School...and I WANTED to go back. Unfortunately, people change with time...I changed, my country changed...I had no ideea that my trip was a no-return trip.

I cannot go back...I don't belong there anymore! I don't fit in that society anymore. It's nothing to dream of for me in that country. If I would go back, it will mean to give up everything I worked for all these years HERE. And I just cannot do that. I love my work too much....it's my life!

Something else...my family...HERE is the only HOME we know. My daughter opened her eyes in this society and I won't take this away from her...She is happy and this is all that matters.

Europe seems attractive to everybody...And, don't get me wrong, it is. I am a "latin heart" that grew up in "german style" dreaming of "slavic" misteries...If you don't live in Europe you won't understand. I don't expect you to.

You see? For ME, personally, China and India and the Far East seams so intriguing. I wish one day to be able to travel and visit and fill my soul with thier beauties. For the moment though, I am HERE, and I WANT to stay HERE, and be part of this country!

Why somebody would be so eager to become US Citizen? This country was built on immigration, this is its beauty and its strength. So, its future stays on our shoulders. And personally, I want to have a saying on what's going on around here. I want to be able to vote, I want to make myself heard...We all do that, don't we?!

It's not easy...

Lets stay together and help each other...at least through this forum...

All my best,

Adina

First of all I agree 100% with what has been said previously!

Also, I left Sweden right out of high school and came here to go to college. I met the love of my life and got married had a couple of kids etc. I have been here my entire adult life, and ten years later I realize (much like Adina said) that I have nothing to go back to. I have become to Americanized. I love Sweden , I love the friends and family I still have there but with that said it will never be more than a yearly vacation destination.

There is a situation that have made this process very hard emotionallly. My grandfather back home is 82 years old and had a stroke in late MAy (right before my interview). He has not yet seen my infant daughter and his situation is not the best. At this point I have not been able to tell him when I can get home and see him and it is hard.....so at least now I could call him yesterday and say I got tickets scheduled for late August.......THAT would be the reason for my EXTATIC happiness for the oath letter :p

also.....As much as the Swedish system was designed to take care of everyone in terms of education, healthcare and such it has over hte years faield much like what our German buddy is describing. At this point the taxes are high and the unemplyment is as well. I never decided to immigrate, I fully expected to go to college, learn great English go home and live my life.

I think Adina is right when she says that there is a mystery or "novelty" about Europe here, but to me Central America with its great history seems so intriguing..... :p

Anywho, figured that would somewhat answer your question :p

It's good that you can go home and see your grandfather! You'll cherish those moments forever. Believe me!!!!!

I was born in my grandmother's hands and I was raised by my grandparents. I loved them more than life itself. I lost my grandmother in 1994. I did not have the chance to say good bye...excruciating pain!!!!!!!!!!

My husband lost his father in 2001. He could not go home...we are waiting for the GC interview (2-3 weeks away!) and he did not have a travel parol. So, we were stuck... We hoped that he will "wait" a little longer...It did not happen.

So..GO! GO and enjoy and love and breathe every moment with the loved one at home. This is forever!

Regards,
Adina

I am sorry to hear what you guys went through....and trust me that is the biggest fear I have had since he had the stroke. I am very close to my grandparents and I just want them to see their greatgrandkids before it is too late!
Hugs

My wife and I originally moved here from the UK because we had job offers we couldn't refuse. A little over 8 years on, neither of us could go back because we no longer have anything in common with the country we left. Of course I'm not saying life here is perfect - far from it - but overall we find ourself with more opportunities to pursue diverse leisure and career choices that were never available in Britain.

Since its part of man's nature to explore, you'd probably find a large percentage of native-born Americans equally happy to emmigrate to Europe.

Same here....everytime I visit the UK now it takes me a month to adjust into the culture again (and it's been 8 yrs for us too). Plus you read the tabloids and think thank Christ I don't live here anymore!!
