I recently obtained my GC in EB2 NIW based on research in substance abuse. Now do I need to continue this research in future. I mean will I have problems if I apply for citizenship down the road and am not involved in any research? Please comment.

May I suggest you obtain capable legal counsel before you make that switch.

The immigration service DOES look at how you got your GC at the time of citizenship. You have to provide a work history for the 5 years prior to applying for citizenship. While it probably doesn't play as big of a role in NIW and research cases, they are interested in how you got your GC and whether you stuck with the company/job or whether you ran the day you got your GC.

I thought if you spend 6 months with the employer you received with is enough. After that you can safely change the employer without any repercussions.

Am I missing something?

My EB2 was self petitioned. I was my own sponsor. Nobody sponsored me. Does that change anything?

You should at least spend some time doing what you got the GC for. That applies to marriage based GCs as well as employment based ones. Self petitioned NIW is probably a bit of a special case, but I certainly wouldn't just run off doing a different job based on anonymous free advice on an internet bulletin board.
