Question about travel document

I recently got approved for GC through Asylum and I am planning to travel in the next 5 months outside US by getting a temp visa if i don't get my green card by then:) . I am planning to apply for a new travel document in advance since it takes couple of months to get it. I have a travel document which i used for traveling in 2004 .it expired in April 2005. I am not sure if i have to send the original TD back when i apply for a new one. in the form it asks for previous issued doc and it it's going to be attached to the form when i apply for new one.
The other issue i have is specifying when i plan to travel. Since i have no clear plan at the moment, i am going to fill it with a probable date. In my previous TD, i had to travel on different time frame and also different destination due to family emergency. Will this affect me in anyway in the future. Please share your experience.
Thanks

First of all congrats. Since the doc had already expired in Apr 05, mail it back with the application. Be sure to make copies of the pages that have entry and exit stamps to bring to your citizenship interview. In some cases, the interviewers will verify the trips against the citizenship application to make sure that the person met the continuous residence requirement. If your travel doc has not expired, you can keep it for travels and USCIS will send you an RFE asking you to mail it back when they are ready to issue you a new one.

Filling in a probable date will not give you any problems.

Good Luck.
