Question about taking the oath

Two questions:
1. What is a modified oath? And why do they allow you to do that? What is the procedure to modify the oath? Why would anyone want to modify the oath? Just trying to understand the concept.

2. What should you take the to the Oath Ceremony other than the physical GC and the letter they send you in the mail?

1. Some applicants are not comfortable to swear that they will take arms in a war situation because of their religious beliefs or other personal reasons. Some do not want an oath where there is a reference to God. These applicants and others who are not comfortable with some aspects of the original oath can require a modified oath and if approved, can take that modified oath.

2. For the ceremony, the oath notice and GC are sufficient. In my case, I was super-cautious and I had all my immigration related documents locked up in my car which was in the USCIS parking lot. I did this just in case if they ask me for some additional documents prior to the oath so I could go back to my car and grab them.

I have done it successfully. See some of my earlier posts regarding that subject:

You can answer No to questions 36, 37, and 38, but you must answer Yes to question 39. You also need to provide supporting documentation and be prepared for some opposition by the IO who is usually not well informed about this subject.
