Question about Renunciation certificate - please help

Friends,

I applied for Renunciation certificate, at San Francisco Indian Consulate by Mail, two weeks back.

(Due to lack of time, for a travel in June, I have not applied for OCI at this time).

I just got a cancelled Indian passport back by mail,
with a stamp on the first page that says "passport is cancelled on acquiring US citizeship".

I was expecting that, I will get Renunciation certificate with consulate signature and stamp.
But I did not get any such certificate.

Is that how it is supposed to be ? , Or the consulate missed to send one to me.

Those who already did this process, please advise me, if I need to followup with Travisa/Consulate, for the Renunciation certificate.

The reason I am concerned for this is, when I am ready to apply for OCI in July/Aug,
how can I submit copy of surrender certificate , with OCI application;
OR is it enough to submit first page of cancelled passport ?

(One of the requirements for OCI application, for those naturalized after May 1, 2010 is:
to submit a copy of "◦A Certificate of Renunciation issued by a Consulate of India")

Please advise me with your experience on Renunciation process.

regards

Did you send 2 copies of the Surrender Certificate? You were supposed to get a surrender certificate copy with a stamp on it and a signature at the time you picked up your Indian passport at the Travisa office. I'd call Travisa and see what's going on.

For the copy of surrender certificate, I believe the copy of the canceled stamp in the Indian passport is sufficient enough. The canceled stamp you get in your passport specifically mentions that the applicant has acquired nationality of another country. So, you should be good on that. But definitely call Travisa and see where is that certificate if you sent 2 copies.

speakamericano, thanks for your reply.

Yes, I submitted 2 copies of the Surrender Certificate, without any doubt.
But I did not get any Surrender Certificate, except the cancelled passport.
I will call Travisa, but not sure how they will handle this.

Any body else in this forum, handled similar situation ?
Please let me know how is this addressed for you.

I just checked my surrender certificate... it has the same stamp on it as the passport. the same numbers and the same date. so it really doesn't make any difference. you need one of them as a proof of renunciation of citizenship. In case, Travisa can't help you on this issue, don't worry. It's no different than the passport. The consulate people are too lazy to hand write stuff. So they just put the stamp and fill in the numbers. All the things written in the box are blank on my returned certificate. Just a stamp is a proof.

I called Travisa today, after 3 Hour 40 Mts wait on the phone, someone talked to me, verified the file
to tell me that they have not received the Renunciation Certificate paper from Consulate.
They said they will followup with Consulate, and call me back in couple of days.

wow! the tragic tales with travisa never seem to end.
@al999, try to negotiate with travisa and see if they can expedite your next item (visa/PIO/OCI) since it was their screw up.

after multiple of hours of spending on phone with travisa, they have asked me to submit the renunciation forms again, they got the process done, and sent the Renunciation certificate to me. The same stamp on the renunciation form , just like the stamp on cancelled passport.
