Question about name on SS card, GC and CA DL...

My wife and I got our Green Cards about a month ago. We have both had CA Drivers Licenses for 10 years. We went to the local SS office today to request new SS# cards without the restrictive "INS" legend on them.

Everything went smoothly, but the SS officer noted that our names on our GC only used initals for our middle names, instead of the full middle names, while our (legacy) SS cards had our names spelled in full. She recommended that our new SS cards match our GCs EXACTLY, so she ordered new cards with our middle names just as initials.

When she looked at our DLs, where our middle names are spelled in full, she pointed out that renewing them (in 2006) might be a problem because the presentation of the middle names between the SS card, the GC and DL won't be consistent... and that the computer systems they use to cross-reference things count the number of characters or something like that.

This all sounds stupidly bureaucratic to me, but she said in the event that our DLs were not automatically renewed we should visit the DMV and request that our DL renewals be issued with our middle names just showing as initials so that all three documents match precisely.

Was she just being ridiculous, or could there be something to her observation? We've always received automatic renewals of our DLs, regardless of the presentation of our middle names between USCIS documents, SS records and DMV records.

After all, our passports have our full middle names (naturally) and the fact that our GCs only have our middle name initials didn't seem to bother the POE officer last time we entered the country!

I had a very similar incident. Something must'v changed recently (maybe govt memo or something), due to which SSN office is paranoid. The lady caught just one little alphabet, a vowel, in my name different and make a big fuss about it, writing a whole story on my form.

Which state you in ?

California.

She implied that all the databases are now somehow linked - and that the systems are easily confused! What a brilliant system.

If renewing DL is difficult, then don't renew it but
apply for completely new one with your GC and SSN cards!

I'd rather not take the driving and written tests again... besides, I don't think the DMV are THAT dumb to not realize that we already have DLs. :)

Then how do you update your DL when you move within California?
Here we get a suppemntal DL. Can you get a supplemental DL
for name change?

In the past, we have a) sent a change of address form to the DMV when we moved, and b) always been sent a renewal notice by the DMV when our licenses are about to expire.

I have no intention of changing our names on our DLs (especially just to shorten our middle names to middle initials only) unless the DMV for some reason don't let us automatically renew our DLs by mail as they have in the past.

I think it might have just been an over-paranoid SS employee who thinks there might be a problem.

Did SSA take away yoru old SSN card? If not, you have two SSN cards.
Use the one with middle name initial for DL

you know what it's really not a big deal right now

once you apply for citizenship then you can have your names be whatever you want and it will be easier that way once you get your citizenship certificate.

Yes, they take away the old cards when you apply for new ones.

Only if you have it with you. I don't think there is a requirement to bring in the old one. I kept my old one, as a souvenir ;)

I wonder if one can apply for a new card by filing SS-5
simply because one want an addiotnal card.
