Question about H1 visa period (I was only issued to next August)

Hi, I got my H1 visa today, but only issued me to August 2008 and only two entry ( my h1 approved letter is to August 2010). I was told it was becuase my current passport would expire on August 2008 and I should go to Canada for reapply h1 visa next July with renewed passport. Is that a reasonable excuse? Anyone has such experience?
If I go to for reapply, what document I should bring, as same as this time?

That's something new because I was issued a visa (in India, March 2003) 2 months beyond the expiry of my old passport. I guess, you can use the same I-797 to get the H-1B stamped (for the remaining period) on your new passport.
