Hi Folks,
We filed our I-485 - application to adjust status - more than 4 years ago. We recd our GCs only 4 months ago. All this time we have not left the country. Someone told me that the 5 years residency requirement to file for citizenship does not necessarily have to be from the date you recd the card but can be a bit earlier as well in certain circumstances. What are those circumstances ? Do any of those apply to us ?
Thx,
BB.

The 5 year residency period begins from the date your permanent residency was granted (usually the day you get the passport stamp, not the actual plastic card). It is also usually the same date printed on your GC.

Assuming no exemptions (e.g. for marriage to USC), you can submit you N-400 up to 90 days prior to the 5 year anniversary.
