Question about Cesar Milan (from Dog Whisperer)'s status

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask... I'm asking this partly because I'm just curious and also because I'm doing a presentation in "Illegal Immigrations in US" for my college Sociology class. I want to tell about the side of the story in illegal immigration besides what's usually written on the newspapers. I'm not trying to make a political point or anything, I just want to tell a different side of the story. ANYWAYS.....
I know that Cesar Milan (from Dog Whisperer) came from Mexico illegally but now legal (through USC spouse, I believe). I'm a little confused about the article below though http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20265399,00.html
because it says he crossed the border illegally, but I thought people who entered illegally without inspection cannot become legal even if they marry, can someone explain this? Is the article wrong? Does anyone know more about him and his status in US? If so, please share, I would really appreciate it!

He probably benefitted from 245(i) which allowed those who entered illegally to adjust status if they were in the US before the cutoff date in 2000 and met certain conditions.

I worked with Mr. Millan for a number of years and was there the day he proudly celebrated his full citizenship status. He did arrive in the US illegally prior to 2000. Although he did marry a USC (and fathered 2 sons who are USC's), he did NOT earn his citizenship through marriage - he could have, but decided against it. Instead he went through legal channels, paid a considerable fine, and went through all the procedures and loopholes toward becoming a citizen on his own. Through him, I came to understand that a Mexican from a poor background such as his own had very little chance of getting to the US legally, no matter what he wanted to do once he got here (he could not have pursued the career path of his talent and dreams had he not come here.) The government is corrupt and it requires either money or connections to get a visa. For him, at least at the time, there were no other possible channels for him to pursue to come to the US.
