From the above link:

Residence and Physical Presence

An applicant is eligible to file if, immediately preceding the filing of the application, he or she:

1. has been lawfully admitted for permanent residence (see preceding section);
2. has resided continuously as a lawful permanent resident in the U.S. for at least 5 years prior to filing with no single absence from the United States of more than one year;
3. has been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months out of the previous five years (absences of more than six months but less than one year shall disrupt the applicant's continuity of residence unless the applicant can establish that he or she did not abandon his or her residence during such period)
4. has resided within a state or district for at least three months

My friend recently got laid off and got an opportunity overseas, which he is seriously considering. He will complete his 5 yrs and will be ready to apply for his citizenship in Sep 2005. He has already completed requirement for 1, 3 and so far.

Q1: If he takes this job and visits once every six months, is there any issue?

Q2. His wife is going to stay back till April or June 2004 for his kids to complete this yr at school and try to pack up and then move. Should she stay back till Sep 2005 and get the citizenship and may be think of moving after that. Would that be wiser?

Q3. If he takes the 2 yr letter from INS. Can he leverage his stay here at least for 3 years and if/when he returns after 2 yrs or before he covers up for the time he stayed out ?

Would appreciate any advice/input.

Thanks In Advance
