Proposed Employment -- I-140 Self Petition

HI

I am considering to apply on my own for EB1 or NIW. I am not sure what should I use as "proposed employment" in I-140 form? I am a post-doc at a major US school, should I use that?

I think I understand the manual for evaluating the EB1-NIW cases fairly well. DO you think a lawyer would be necessary?
