pronounced dead at I-485 interview

I had my I-485 interview and everything was going ok until the officer announced that I was marked 'dead' in the I-94 computer system for one of my H1 entries into the US. They hold off on the approval until they do an investigation. Has anyone come across such a problem? I can't see why the I-94 computer system would even have a field to denote the dead/alive status of a person.

That is indeed unique.
everytime you think the INS/USCIS has done the unthinkable.

Voila ! it outdoes itself.

Having a field for 'dead' status in I-94 system makes some sense. The system supposed to track all people who stay in the US temporary. When someone dies during his/her temporal stay, he/she does not need to be tracked anymore and may never leave the US without getting permanent status. For example, I live in the US for 10 years and still have a status of temporal visitor. If CIS continue processing my case with the same speed, one day I'll be old and die. And they will be able to check 'dead' in their systems and stop my I485 processing. :(

Good point!

That makes some sense but should these databases all be crosslinked such that I would not have been able to apply and get approved for a new H1 (since at this point I'm dead) just 2 months ago? This particular H1 was apparently from around year 2000.

information management is very poor in all governmental agencies. Their systems are rudimentary and outdated because smart people don't work for them, they work for google. What FBI does for name check in 3 years, google can do in a second.

I imagine even if there were smart people inside, they probably have so many layers of approvals needed to make changes like the one's needed very little gets done. Look how long it took to get PERM. I think there's hundreds of very talented immigrants who would gladly volunteer their time to help USCIS upgrade their system to the 21st century.

Enjoy while you are dead ;) You probably may not have much time left ;)

They say it's a very good omen

It's a good omen when you have been considered dead while alive :) .

You will live a loooong life man :) straight to Guinness book of records.

My best wishes to you, I think that mess in your files is gonna be cleaned.

Although it is not funny there were some of this kind of incidents In India/Pakistan. The relatives use to notify the local Government some one as dead and claim his property. All such dead people made a union to fight against that. That union was called as Association of dead people and sad thing is still it is going on.

I did not know that and I wholeheartedly apologize if my joke hurt someone's feelings. Just wanted to spirit up the author of this thread...

I agree with you tammy2. Your earlier message is merely a statement of a fact, there is nothing derogatory about it.

Similar thing happened in a very close relation of mine, in southern India.

My point was DO NOT refer to India ....

i dont care if such things have happened in reality but do not want somebody to point my country as an example to such incidents.
