Promotion during I140/I485 pending

Presently I am a senior software engineer, It's been approx 3 months
since my I140/485 has been applied. I have received my EAD.

My company wants to promote me from senior software engineer to
Principal engineer. But attorneys says this is not possible during
this stage of GC processing.
Is this TRUE, Can some one provide a detail of any LAWS in this regard.

This is not neccessarily correct as long as job duties are same/similor. I-140 approved for substituted labor case ( with LC approved for S/w Engineer) where as beneficiary title principal s/w enginner and hugh salary difference.
