I have checked option to make a name change. But I don't know the process, could someone help understand (please point me to thread if one already exists)
Thanks
In my case, all I did was added a name to the form when I filled out my N400. AT the interview, the Officer asked why I wanted to add the name. Then she gave me a name change form to sign.
FYI, changing your name will delay your oath ceremony date.
And the name change does not take effect until the oath is completed.
However, about the oath delays -- there are a couple of scenarios where that delay is avoided.
The most common one is name change due to marriage (taking the spouse's last name). This does not require a judicial oath, so this type of name change would not cause a delay. However, in this scenario it is important to point out the name change reason to the interviewer and show your marriage certificate, otherwise the interviewer might schedule you for a judicial oath if they don't realize it's a marriage-based name change.
The other scenario is where all naturalization oaths for a given location are judicial oaths. The name change won't cause a delay since you'll be getting a judicial oath no matter what, if you live in a location like that.
