Process Length?

In 1 year I will be marrying a Bahamian National. I am a US Citizen. Considering the fact that we don't get to see each other much because of the distance (I am in NY and she is in The Bahamas) I would like to us to be able to live in NY together immediately after we are married. I have been told by a few people that the process is lengthy. Could someone tell me how long the process will take for her to get permanent residency/ green card. I am just starting to learn about the process now so I may not always be using the correct terminology. I saw some information that leads me to believe that I can't do anything until we are married. BTW, we are getting married in the Bahamas not here. Is there anything that can be done ahead of time to cut down on the time and any inconviences? Thank all of you for your advice/help in advance.

Get her a fiance visa

This visa will allow her to travel to US. She should enter US. Then U can still get married to her outside the US but she should come to US again. and apply for adjustment of status so she wont have to wait outside. Its straight forward really. My brother did it, he is a citizen.

What you were told applies mostly to non US citizens who are marrying a foreign national and want to bring that person into US. Then its lengthy. Good luck...

And of course, consult a lawyer for up to date and accurate legal infomation.
