I see so many people creating new thread once they send in N400 without reading or spending any time on forum. So I decided to create this thread as a guide for all new N400 applicants. Below are standard timeline. Some cases may have huge delay due to some circumstances.
1) After N400 is received, Checks are electronically debited with approximate 7-15days
2) Receipt and priority numbers are generated and mailed to applicants at the same time
3) After around 2 weeks you should receive a RFE email or status update online which 99% means System have scheduled you for Finger printing (FP=Biometrics) at your local application support center and you should receive notice with date and time. You can obviously try walk-in for early or later FP assuming your center allows it.
Once your are done with FP, start preparing for interview ( collection of documents)
a) Check with Sticky Documents needed for N400 http://forums.immigration.com/showthread.php?t=288288
b) Prepare for Civic exams.
4) After FP depending on speed of your District Office (DO) you may or may not see case status for yellow letter (YL) asking certain documents to be brought along at Interview. Some Do takes takes less than 3 weeks after Fp, Some are as slow as three months. During this period you can spend time on this forum to read more.
5) One fine day you will see your online case status will change to (Case sent for Standard Interview to local Do). Once you are at this stage you should received IL (Interview letter) most probably in 1-2 weeks which will have your Interview date and time.
6) You show up at Interview and update us. The officer will either approve, or wait for supervisor approval or denial. Some DO have same day Oath ceremony and you can ask your Interview officer about it once he tells you about approval. You definitely have the right to know results if you ask in humble way. The IO will tell you details too.
7) After Interview if the IO did not gave you same day Oath you wait for Oath letter in mail and enjoy the ceremony.
Thanks. Moderators please if possible put this as sticky for all new applicants..
