problems working in USA with DV lottery

Hi everybody,

I entered USA a month ago after winning the DV lottery. So, as everybody else I guess, I only got a visa in my passport that says: 'Upon endorsement serves as temporary I-551 evidencing permanent residence for 1 year'. And now I have to wait (around 5/6 months) untill I get the original green card.

So in US customs I only got a stamp on my passport and they said I could use this visa for working until i get the green card.
The problem, I'm working in two universities as an adjunct and I had problems in both..in one of them they couldn't find the Alien number..so they just used the registration number instead which is in this visa.
In the other university i'm having more problems..they say they need more documentation showing that i'm a permanent resident..but I only have this visa in my passport!! what should i do??

thanks for ur help!

Ana

The registration number on the immigration visa IS the alien number. I also entered a month ago and a few days ago I received the welcome letter. On there the alien number is shown and it's the same number as the registration number on the visa but with an A and then a 0 before the number. Once you have the welcome letter, this is an additional proof that you can use.
Have you applied for a Social Security Card?

Hi Igmu,

thanks for your message. I already had a social security number since I was here before on a J1. I hope I get that welcome letter soon...

Good luck to you! I'm still waiting on my SSC as there has been a delay in approving my case for some reason (but it is approved now)... and according to the welcome letter my plastic greencard should be here in 30days.

In the other university i'm having more problems..they say they need more documentation showing that i'm a permanent resident..but I only have this visa in my passport!!
They better learn something more about immigration, the stamp in you passport give your permanent residence status.
