problems with temporary stamp expiring

Hi folks. My temporary stamp expires May 30 with no sign of plastic card yet. From April 1 to June 30, I will be visiting my parents in China, so I went to INS-Detroit to get the stamp renewed.

An EXTREMELY obnoxious INS employee, the first person at the front booth where we get our numbers, said she could not renew the temporary stamp She said a stamp can be renewed only a month before it expires, not before. I said but I\'ll be in China at that time. She told me take your chances at the consulate in China then, whatever she meant by that. I didn\'t stay around very long to ask more questions because she was almost yelling at all people that day.

People here, please suggest what I should do. Is there some way I can get my stamp renewed before I leave for China?

renewing stamp

That person might be wrong, but I too came back empty-handed.

In my case too - DetroitINS - they turned me away saying they will not renew before 30 days are up. I wanted to make a trip to Turkey to visit a very sick relative who is there, but now I can\'t go since I don\'t have the plastic card and my stamp will expire exactly when I am in Turkey. So I don\'t want to take no chances.

Yes, the lady at the front in Detroit is arrogant, rude, a big shouter, insults our intelligence, and very very very very very very racist inspite of being black herself. Report her you say? That will take a person who has more courage than me.

I too have noticed subservience by minorities, including people from my country, which is often justified by them as "respect" or a "cultural thing", although I am certainly not buying that line of argument! Then again, subservience is expected of minorities, so if we aren\'t subservient, it is perceived as arrogance, which is not a good thing to be assciated with when you transact with someone from the INS.

Coming back to the Detroit case being discussed, I think I know exactly who the posters are referring too. Boy, she is indeed rude! Joe, you say that one of us report her now that we have the green card, but somehow the stamp in the passport does not seem to be exactly the equivalent of a green card, does it? If you check Murthy\'s website and sites of other lawyers, you\'ll find that we get secondary inspection at the point of entrys along with all other foreigners, while people with plastic cards can use the citizen\'s line. I still don\'t feel as if I have a green card (I know, I know, the permanent residency status never expires, but try your luck getting into the country with an expired green card stamp in your passport, i.e. without the actual plastic card).

All that being said, I am a very successful lobbyist these days, which is quite surprising because people from my country as virtually absent in my profession. And I can assure you that the "immigrant lobby" is one of the weakest in the country, despite the fact that each and every one of us, except the Natives, are immigrants, and inspite of the fact that we have attorney power behind us. All this has got to do with two mentalities: the subservience mentality of recent immigrants (both white and non-white) and more importantly the attitude most of us have, which is Hey-I-paid-my-dues-to-get-in-now-let-other-immigrants-too-suffer-getting-in.

Similar case

My friend had the similar problem. The INS won\'t renew her stamp because it is before one month.

PLASTIC CARD NOT HERE

Please let me know if we need to take any documents when going for renewal of passport stamp. I have to go to Detroit INS.

Thanks for your help.
