hi guys.I just came from my local DMV trying to renew my driver license .My J1 visa expired long time ago but I applied for adjustment of status for which I received NOA.On my states DMV internet page it says that I can renew my licence with I797 +passaport+SSC .I got all this but still they said that they e mailed INS for further evidence and said I should be waiting for a INS letter in mail.I really think that is really stupid. What else do you need?I'm very upset and I'm going to talk to a supervisor tomorrow but till then I really need some input ?Are they right to refuse my renewal?Any other experiences like this?

Most DMVs these days will not immediately renew your license; they verify your documents with USCIS and you get the license some days or weeks later. Did they at least accept your renewal application?

yes they made copies of all my documents and said that they requested more evidence from Ins and I should receive something in the mail.

Yes they did make copies of all my documents and said they emailed Ins for more evidence and I should receive something in the mail.Is that a new thing they do?Requesting for more evidence? Is it standard?I dont't know if I should wait or talk to the superviser. One more thing ,what would I call my status now that I applied for AOS (married to a USC) and beeing out of status for a few years?

Then you'll be fine, this is standard procedure for noncitizens who don't have a GC.

For what purpose do you have to specify your status?

I guess I don't .I'd better calm down and just wait and see what happens .Hopefully this is just a formality as you said and I should get my license renewed soon. Thanks a lot for your help .You guys are so great on this forum ,have all the answers:).Thanks a lot.

Even happens if you do have a GC, but it probably also depends on the state. I had to renew my license in MO, and they gave me a paper print out as a temp license for about 2 weeks until the actual one came in the mail. More annoying is that they use the date on GC as expiration date for DL (so in my case license is valid for 15 months, and i gotta go get another one when i get a renewed GC)
