problem about EAD and 140

Suppose one guy is using EAD to work for company B while he has pending 140/485 case with company A. And company A is willing to support him for any RFE for 140.

But if when this guy is renewing his EAD , it happens there is a REF on 140 at that time. Can he still get the EAD renewed?

Or since his 140 is "on hold", the EAD can not be renewed until the 140 is approved? If this is the case, he can not even work for company A any more since EAD is not renewed.
