I just noticed that the PD section in my I-485 receipt notice is blank. Is it normal? How come somebody else who applied around the same time had it assigned? Will it make a difference?

I was in the same boat as you. Priority date on my 485 notice was blank but it wasn’t the case with the approval notice.
 
do you mean that they assigned a PD on your approval notice

Yes. And that date is the date I filed for labor certificate. That means that's when I started my GC processing.
